The best time to discover weak A/C or a coolant leak is before you need the car for a long, hot drive. A summer check gives you time to sort out what needs attention, order parts if necessary and avoid making repair decisions from the side of the freeway.
This checklist is for preparation, not a package of ten things every car needs replaced. Bring your service records and owner’s manual requirements into the conversation. If summer has already arrived, it is still useful.
1. Check the cooling system while it is cold
Check the reservoir level as the owner’s manual directs. Report repeated coolant loss, dried residue or a coolant smell. Never open a radiator or pressurized reservoir cap while hot. A low level needs an explanation; adding coolant is not the same as repairing a leak.

2. Assess the battery and starting system
Tell the shop about slow starts, recent jump-starts or a battery warning. Check an aging or questionable battery rather than replacing it by age alone. Loose connections and charging faults can produce symptoms that a new battery will not solve.
3. Check cold tire pressures and condition
Use the pressure on the vehicle placard or in the manual, measured with the tires cold—generally after parking at least three hours. Do not let air out of hot tires to match the cold figure. Check tread, sidewalls, unusual wear and the spare or tire-repair kit.
4. Try the A/C before a long trip
Notice cooling and airflow at idle and while driving. Report warm air, intermittent cooling or unusual noises. A seasonal check does not mean refrigerant must be added every year. For symptoms, see our A/C repair service.
5. Confirm oil service is due—and use the right oil
Check mileage, time and the vehicle’s maintenance reminder. Use the approved oil grade and specification; hotter weather alone is not a reason to choose thicker oil. Busy Bots offers same-day oil changes. Walk-ins are welcome, with no appointment required.
6. Review other fluids without blindly topping them off
Brake fluid, transmission fluid and power-steering fluid have different requirements, and not every vehicle has a serviceable reservoir for each. Low brake fluid may reflect wear or a leak. Some transmissions require a specific procedure and temperature for a level check. Ask what a low reading means before adding fluid.
7. Inspect accessible belts and hoses
Look for leaks, damage and wear where accessible. Timing-belt service is based on the applicable interval and history; a quick look under the hood cannot establish the condition of every hidden component. Tell the shop if records are missing.
8. Check visibility and lights
Test wipers and washers, inspect the windshield for visibility problems and check exterior lights. Replace wiper blades that streak, split or fail to clear the glass. A sunshade can help with cabin comfort when parked, but it does not make leaving a child or pet in a parked car safe.
9. Report braking or steering changes
A soft pedal, grinding, a pull or a new vibration should not wait for a seasonal appointment. Have the concern assessed and discuss whether the car is safe to drive. Our brake inspection and repair page explains how findings determine the work needed.
10. Prepare for a roadside delay
Carry drinking water, a charged phone and charging cable, a flashlight and your roadside-assistance details. Check that any jump starter is charged and stored according to its instructions. Know where the spare and tools are, or whether your vehicle uses a repair kit.
If the engine overheats, stop safely and shut it off rather than trying to finish the trip. Keep the cooling-system caps closed while hot and arrange help.
Leave with priorities, not just a checklist
Ask which findings need prompt repair, what scheduled maintenance is due and what can be monitored. A useful inspection tells you why each item matters. It cannot guarantee that no part will fail later.
