Why Is My Car Overheating in Traffic? (But Not on the Highway)

Car Cooling System Problems

If you’ve noticed your temperature gauge climbing while you’re sitting at a red light, only to return to normal once traffic starts moving, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common cooling-system concerns we diagnose at Busy Bots Auto Repair.

Many drivers immediately assume they need a new radiator. In reality, the key isn’t simply that your engine is overheating—it’s when it overheats.

Every summer in Las Vegas we diagnose vehicles that overheat only while stopped in traffic. Many customers arrive after another shop recommended replacing the radiator. Sometimes that’s correct, but we often find the real problem is a cooling fan, low coolant, a sticking thermostat, a worn water pump, a restricted radiator or a hidden coolant leak.

When you’re driving, natural airflow passes through the radiator. When you’re stopped, the vehicle depends almost entirely on the electric cooling fan. If airflow is reduced, engine temperatures rise quickly.

Professional diagnosis begins with understanding exactly when the overheating occurs. Our technicians perform computer diagnostics, pressure testing, cooling-fan testing, thermostat evaluation, radiator inspection, water-pump inspection, coolant testing and a road test before recommending repairs.

If steam is coming from under the hood, the temperature gauge enters the red zone or an overheating warning appears, pull over safely and shut the engine off. Continuing to drive can cause severe engine damage.

Regular coolant service, hose inspections and cooling-system checks help prevent expensive engine repairs, especially in the extreme Las Vegas heat.

Busy Bots Auto Repair believes diagnosis comes before replacing parts. Our ASE-certified technicians identify the true cause of overheating so customers receive the repair they actually need—not a guess.
